“The initiative to start APAA was a call from the heart.”

Our goal is to bring understanding and raise awareness as well as ensure the promotion of the Afghan Archaeological and Cultural Heritage. This goal is realized through its teaching in schools and public venues internationally, including in Afghanistan and in the Afghan and multi-cultural Bay Area community. Our work also consists in promoting and assisting in the education of the international public about the inherent value of archaeological treasures to cultural identity, and to specifically focus on the plight of FredericAfghan people regarding the loss of their cultural heritage.

Through APAA Dr.Tarzi is assisting in educating the younger generations as well as the older ones. This is done by publishing children and scientific books as well as provide education and training programs and tools in Afghanistan to future Archaeologists so they may in turn become self reliant and efficient Professionals of the trowel and skilled restorers. Finally, APAA hopes to inspire future generations in having the incentive to learn about, protect and preserve their unique heritage and further educate themselves and others on the importance and value of archaeological and historical heritages.

"Archaeology of Afghanistan: It's Past, Present and Future"

Following the horrendous 2001 destruction of the two giant Bamiyan Buddha statues, by the Taliban, former senior archaeologist of Afghanistan and specialist of Bamiyan, is back in the peaceful valley to resume his work where he left it in 1979. Indeed, with the ongoing support of the Afghan and French Governments, National Geographic Society and the APAA, since 2002, Dr. Tarzi, has been conducting the first open air excavation ever in the Bamiyan valley. In this large excavation campaign what he has found surpassed his expectations, indeed his discoveries are changing the chronology of the site as we knew it, give us a better understanding of life on the ancient Silk Road and bring a new meaning to the words hope and healing. This compelling talk will discuss the latest findings of Dr. Tarzi and also address the devastation Afghanistan's archaeological heritage has been facing for the past 25 years.

WHO, WHAT, WHERE on APRIL 30th

APAA had its first fundraiser on April 30th 2004 “Restoring Afghanistan’ Heritage”. We thank Tony and Sam Abrahim, twin brothers born in Afghanistan and owners of IMGHome for generously hosting this successful event. APAA was honored to welcome as speakers Mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom, San Francisco French Consul Général Monsieur and Madame Frédéric Desagneaux, CEO and President of KQED Jeff Clarke, Chief Curator of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco Forest McGill, Senior vice President of TV&Film at National Geography Society Maryanne Culpepper and UC Berkeley Professor David Stronach. The full program was presented by Claire Greensfelder whom we are very greateful to.

APAA was equally honored to receive and read stunning letters of support and encouragement from His Excellency Ambassador of Afghanistan Said Tayeb Jawad, Senator Barbara Boxer, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi and Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey. These letters will be available for viewing on the APAA website by August 2004.

Kimberly Howland generously donated to APAA a $2,600.00 jiclé print of a Buddha face of which the original hangs in the atrium of Tea Garden Springs Spa in Mill Valley. This print began a “pilgrimage” on April 30th and will continue to be raffled off throughout the Bay Area between the month of August 2004 and end of September 2004. Please check back at www.apaa.info for specifics in the Events section for location and times for the raffle and the official event when the lucky winner will be drawn.

Many other generous supporters donated beautiful gifts for the silent auction. APAA would like to specifically thank the following: Roy Nee, Tea Garden Spring Spa, Mill Valley Michael and Louise Solomon, Tower Records Melody Ermachild Author “Meena Heroine of Afghanistan” Chris Phillips President Actors Theater of San Francisco MSR Communications Cheryl Bar Bar-or Ranch And many more……

Many thanks to Eric and Tyson at Knackdesign for designing our beautiful invitations and our new logo, to Michael Hewson for his art and dedication to our website, to Ballet Afsaneh and Aziz Herawi for bringing the dance and music of Afghanistan. And lot’s and lot’s of thanks to the wonderful team of volunteers, Tea Garden Spring Spa staff, UC Berkeley Archaeology Students and IMGhome staff.

Thank you for your attention and all of your sincere support. Many blessings to all.
